Essay Writing Ideas: Brainstorm Subjects of Interest
When it comes to writing essays, there’s no more fun you can have then brainstorming. This is the moment where all your ideas run wild and everything is possible, where you are free simply to think and create and develop. Later on, you’ll have to worry about what works and what doesn’t, but while you brainstorm you can do anything. So follow these tips on ways to brainstorm for you essay:
- Group Think
- Spider Diagram
- Talk to Yourself
When it comes to brainstorming, people are powerful. Gather some close friends, colleagues and acquaintances. Sit together, either at a house or a coffee shop or wherever. Talk them through your ideas and what you’re planning on doing and then take it in turns to go around the table and debate the pros and cons. See what other ideas people come up with. Take notes, as you never know where a good idea is going to come from.
Give yourself some time alone to think. Space and freedom are very important. Put on some relaxing meditative music. Take out a pen and paper and write your topic at the top. Allow your mind to wander and drift. Don’t hold yourself back. Whatever you come up with is a good idea here. Later on you can prune the ideas for good ones and bad, but right here, right now, everything is allowed.
If meditating isn’t for you and you don’t trust your friends as far as you can throw them, try a spider diagram. Come up with four or five good ideas and flesh them out. Extrapolate. Where to the ideas lead? What problems arise? How do the ideas intertwine and connect? A spider diagram can allow you to follow a train of thought all the way down to its conclusion and it’s a great way of keeping track of your thoughts as you have it all there right in front of you.
Talk to Yourself
Sure, it sounds odd, but you’d be surprised at how easy it is to dislodge an idea when you have a conversation with yourself. Talk it through, ask yourself pointed questions and be harsh. You want to delve into everything, so hold nothing back. Combine this with a bit of meditation, or follow it up with a spider diagram and you have yourself the making of a real good brainstorming session.
