Multiple Sclerosis
Multiple sclerosis is a very harmful disease, which affects both the main parts of the central nervous system. It is an autoimmune disease, which means, that one’s own immune system damages the nerves of the two main components of Central nervous system. It results in loss of muscle control, balance, sensation and vision.
The immunity system in the body fights the foreign bodies and destroys the substances like bacteria. This is how it maintains the natural defense system of the body. Sometimes it mistakenly attacks the normal tissues and causes diseases known as autoimmune diseases. In Multiple Sclerosis, the two basic components of CNS (Central Nervous System), are attacked by the body’s immune system.
The body’s messenger system is based upon the nerves of central nervous system. These nerves are covered by the myelin layer, which protects and helps in the communication of impulses through the nerves, carrying messages, from all the body organs to the brain. The movement of muscles and tissues like, stretching or bending are controlled by these messages.
Sclerosis is a scar tissue in the CNS, so MS; Multiple sclerosis is derived from this scar or sclerosis tissue. The insulating myelin layer is damaged by demyelination, and when it occurs, the brain cannot accept or send any messages, as when the myelin layer gets damaged the electric signals which are transmitted between brain and spinal cord are disordered or ceased. This, halt of communication leads to MS.
The process of recovering the myelin is time taking and it cannot beat the corrosion that is arising in the MS. With the extent in demyelination, the types and the cruelty of symptoms vary.
The National Multiple Sclerosis Society has shown in a recent research that over 400,000 people in America are affected by this disease and the neurological disability is caused by this disease in middle age.
Women are more likely to get affected by this disease as men. According to the recent research MS is almost three times more common in women than men. The risk of this disease is highest at the age of 50. The average age of the victims is from teens to 50. While the risk of getting affected before teens and after 50 is unusual.
Multiple Sclerosis is the most havoc disease, caused by the disorder of the nerves. It breaks down the communication between brain and spinal cord. Some scientists believe that there are some other unknown reasons like genetic combination which cause the symptom of MS. This disease is recoverable but the process is very slow and time taking.
